History

In 1969, J. Robert Beyster, Ph.D., and a small group of research scientists founded Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) in San Diego. Their goal was to solve challenging problems of national importance by using science and technology. From science to solutions, their hard work set the stage for the future, with highly qualified employee owners performing work on extremely complex technical problems.

In the 1970s, expertise in nuclear weapons effects grew and helped foster the growth of computer-related expertise. Work in space and planetary sciences and health was initiated. Environmental research and development and services were established. The company became recognized as a leader in the application of solar technologies. Policy support services were provided for the Theater Warfare Project Office (which continues today), and the Kuwait Training Program. The Washington, D.C. area office was opened in 1970.

Throughout the 1980s, expertise expanded in all business areas and included nuclear safety; advanced, specialized software and technologies; and physical oceanographic services and instrumentation. The company played a key role in responding to the Three Mile Island nuclear accident in 1980 and to the discovery of massive environmental contamination at Love Canal in New York state in 1981. SAIC provided support for missile defense systems and programs and developed, designed, and integrated a command, control, and communications system for the Royal Saudi Naval Forces. Work began on the Composite Health Care System for U.S. military hospitals worldwide. SAIC also performed technical design of the winning challenger for the 1984 America's Cup. In 1989, SAIC demonstrated the first luggage inspection machine to pass FAA-conducted tests after the bombing of Pan American flight 103.

In the 1990s, SAIC became one of the world's largest engineering and consulting services companies. It provided worldwide systems management and integration services for government and commercial customers and completed the core software development for next generation networking. In addition to aiding air traffic control and law enforcement, it provided advanced/intelligent transportation technologies and information systems and services, and operated the National Cancer Institute's largest research center. SAIC was involved with defense technology conversion and health care reform. There was strong growth in Internet technologies and desktop computing services. SAIC's work for the Army's National Training Center at Fort Irwin, California, was important to the success of Operation Desert Storm in 1991.

With the beginning of the new century, SAIC was managing large, complex outsourcing projects and providing systems integration, IT services, and e-commerce solutions as well as wireless technologies, and intelligent network platforms to serve both government and commercial customers. IT support services for federal agencies included a broad range of critical infrastructure protection support services and information assurance capabilities. In addition to logistics and weapon systems engineering and technical services, SAIC also provided R&D and advanced technologies to support government initiatives.

The company provided wide-ranging support in New York City and Washington, D.C. and for military and government agencies in the aftermath of 9/11. Support also was provided for the military campaigns in Afghanistan and Iraq and for the rebuilding of Iraq. SAIC worked with government agencies to develop the nation’s first state homeland security program, used for the 2002 Winter Olympics, and now supports the Department of Homeland Security and a wide variety of homeland security initiatives.

Today, SAIC, with offices in150 cities worldwide, has experienced 36 consecutive years of revenue growth, is the largest employee-owned research and engineering company in the United States, and is ranked #276 in the 2005 Fortune 500®. The employee-owners of SAIC continue to be dedicated to producing value for their customers -- helping businesses become more competitive, industries adapt to change, and government protect and serve its people.
