Looking for Leaders
Corrections is an exciting and dynamic field. CCA correctional officers are not simply guards who watch inmates - they are leaders who manage our facilities, provide a host of educational and rehabilitative services, and mentor the inmates in our care, as well as mentor and train the less experienced correctional staff in their ranks. Our employees are the backbone of our company's success - and play a pivotal role in our mission of helping to return better citizens to society.
Your ability to prosper in an environment in which giving and taking orders are crucial to the safety and effectiveness of the organization will serve you well at CCA. Individuals with military experience are well prepared to take leadership roles at CCA as they present themselves.
As a company, our standard is to provide the highest quality corrections services in our industry. To be the best, we look for employees with excellent leadership skills, confidence and the discipline to be the best - many of the same traits that members of the Armed Forces possess, by virtue of your training and experience.
"I transitioned from the U.S. military about five years ago, following a 23-year military career," explains Matt Carpenter, First Sergeant, U.S. Army (Retired) and Executive Assistant at CCA's Cibola County Correctional Center in New Mexico. "Since corrections is based on a military model, it seemed like a compatible career for me to move into. So I chose the corrections industry leader, Corrections Corporation of America. CCA is an innovative company, grounded in the principles of integrity, trust and respect. This path has proven to be a very rewarding career with a secure future."

Co-founder - Tom Beasley:
CCA's military roots extend back to the company's beginnings. Company co-founder Tom Beasley graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1966, and served as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army in Vietnam, the Panama Canal Zone and the Republic of Nicaragua. He received the Silver Star and two Bronze Stars for valor in Vietnam. He is also a U.S. Army Ranger.
"I attended West Point and later, Vanderbilt University Law School, but the most important preparation I received was in the U.S. military," says Beasley. "The military is a proven system that has worked for hundreds of years - nothing compares with it. It teaches men and women to deal with superior/subordinate relationships in a tiered management structure. Military experience fosters a sense of integrity, solid values, and leadership skills."
In addition to founding CCA in 1983 and presiding over the company's management team for many years, Beasley's career experience has spanned law, government, and politics. He has spearheaded political campaigns, fulfilled gubernatorial committee appointments and served as the state chair of the Republican Party in CCA's home state of Tennessee. He currently serves as Chairman Emeritus of CCA's Board of Directors. "A military background is the very best training a person could ever have for any career field," he continues. "My own experience ranged from serving as a West Point 'plebe' to a commanding officer in a combat zone. I learned valuable life lessons and developed skills that benefited me in my chosen career. The way the military teaches people to lead, follow, and respond has no peer."
"The corrections industry is rooted in similar qualities, and military experience lends itself very well to this environment: the ability to respond quickly and make instant decisions. Self-starters and leaders prosper in our company's environment, and we value employees who have been trained in the military - they embody the characteristics we strive to instill in all CCA staff."
