Hundreds of jobless veterans and employers from nearly 40 corporations, law enforcement, service and government agencies are expected to turn out for today's RecruitMilitary Career Fair at the Sam Houston Race Park.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Lowe's, Continental Airlines and CVS are among the companies and agencies participating in today's free event, open to all veterans.

The jobs range from management to entry-level positions, said Larry Slagel, a vice president of RecruitMilitary. The Cincinnati-based agency connects employers with men and women making the transition from active duty to civilian life, members of the National Guard and reserve forces, and military spouses.

RecruitMilitary, the American Legion and HireVets First, a unit of the Department of Labor, are sponsors. Such events typically attract about 800 job seekers. About 25 percent of the attendees get second interviews and job offers, Slagel said.

Thirteen career fairs were held across the country last year, and 45 are planned for this year.

One is planned today in Baton Rouge, La., and others are scheduled April 12 in Richardson, a Dallas suburb, and April 16 in Austin.
