Career Self-Assessment Products

Several self-assessment products are routinely used by career counselors. The following is a list of several of the more popular self-assessment tools. RecruitMilitary is providing these descriptions only for informational purposes. We receive no payment or other material benefit for doing so.

Campbell Interest and Skills Inventory (CISS) - CISS measures self-reported vocational interests and skills. Specifically, it measures your attraction for specific occupational areas. It also measures your confidence in your ability to perform various occupational activities. The assessment costs $17.95, and is available from Pearson Assessments at www.pearsonassessments.com/tests/ciss.htm.

CareerLeader - CareerLeader is a career assessment tool directed toward business school students and graduates. It was developed in 1998 by Dr. Timothy Butler and Dr. James Waldroop at the Harvard Business School. It provides assessments of your business interests, values, and abilities; recommends specific career paths; and rates your entrepreneurial attributes. It is available online at www.careerleader.com for a fee of $95.

Chally Sales Assessment - The HR Chally Sales assessment will determine your sales aptitude. The assessment is free to all job seekers registered in the RecruitMilitary database.

Keirsey Temperament Sorter II - The Keirsey Temperament Sorter II is based on the MBTI. Keirsey classifies the 16 MBTI personalities into 4 temperaments in order to help you understand your traits, motivations, and behaviors. The assessment tool is available at www.advisorteam.com for no fee. Two reports are available for purchase: the classic report ($14.95) and the career report ($19.95).

Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) - MBTI is the most widely used personality inventory. MBTI is used in career counseling to determine personality characteristics and match these characteristics to career choices. MBTI is available online from a number of sources, and is free in most cases.

Self Directed Search (SDS) - SDS was developed by the former Case Western Reserve professor John Holland. Holland's theory is that most people can be classified within six types: Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, and Conventional. The SDS will determine your 3-letter Holland code to help you find the careers that best match your interests and abilities. The SDS assessment is available at www.self-directed-search.com at a cost of $9.95. The assessment report provides a list of occupations and college majors that most closely match your interests.

Strong Interest Inventory - This inventory measures your interests in ten functional work areas. It reports on a wide range of occupations, work activities, leisure activities, and school subjects. The instrument includes results on the 6 Holland types, 25 basic interests, 109 contemporary occupations, and 4 personal styles. This assessment is available online from a number of different companies, and is usually priced between $75 and $80.
